“The pro-life movement claims that it wants more than the policy change of making abortion illegal, but aims to make it unthinkable. That would require deep changes in society and policies that would support those who find it difficult to afford children. The association of our young people with racist acts and a politics of hate must also become unthinkable.”
An interesting perspective from a Catholic Bishop. One of the issues brought to the forefront by the encounter in Washington is the question of the close association of the Christian right with the President. Some see the President as the best chance of enacting specific points in their agenda, but the attendant costs of associating the Christian Gospel to Trumpism renders the ultimate value of victory on single issues questionable. Does uncritical Christian support for Donald Trump advance or harm the advance of the Gospel?
That Catholic students in the March for Life wore the slogan of a politician who denigrates immigrants, refugees and foreigners is evidence that Catholics’ opposition to abortion has become separated from the even more basic truth of the dignity of each human person.
