CNN: Trump confuses patriotism with jingoism

This is not just Trump being characteristically unhinged. This is the new Republican strategy. Anyone who criticizes or disagrees with Republicans or their policies (caging babies, endless wars, tax breaks for the rich, throwing people off health care) “hates America.” Trump said about the “patriots” who chanted “send her back” at his yokelpalooza was that “these are people that love our country. I want them to keep loving our country. ” and “Those are incredible people. Those are incredible patriots,”

However, I would submit that if someone is really a “patriot” who “loves our country” they ought to love the principles of our country as they are stated in our core documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Gettysburg Address. In fact, the measure of American citizenship is allegiance to those principles. There is nothing in those documents or principles that would condone chanting “send her back” about another American citizen.

The founders were willing to risk their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor in sacrifice to those principles. And may I remind you that the United States was founded by dissenters, revolutionaries who were willing to risk all for the country they loved.

They refused to kowtow to the King.
